LIVING IN EL SALVADOR

Living styles throughout El Salvador range from dirt and wood houses to outstanding and luxurious homes. As of 2023, 27.5% of the population was below the poverty line, making it the highest rate in all of Latin America. Rural areas are the most common living places for those struggling, compared to urban areas where people on the wealthier side settle. Here, in urban settings, homes are typically made of bricks and cement, making them more stable compared to the ones made of dirt and wood. There are many reasons for these high poverty rates including extreme weather events, rising food insecurity, high levels of human mobility, and escalating living costs and inflation due to global economic trends. Between 2 years, 15.8% is the hunger rate in the country. This number has risen over periods due to the rising of inflation, making it difficult to purchase enough food. Those that struggle rely on low-income jobs in agriculture or informal sectors, which just isn’t enough to provide, especially when caretaking a family. El Salvadorans struggling with poverty, have limited education due to high dropout rates, which is what's stopping them from getting better paying jobs later on. Along with that, there is also limited access to healthcare, which isn’t good considering the conditions they are living in.
